The Caregivers

Karen Headshot.jpeg

Karen Renee Nguyen, Certified Nurse Midwife

When I was a little girl, I always wanted to be a nurse.

I volunteered as a Candy Striper for years, and I was always happy when I got

to be on the Maternity Ward.  I loved seeing mothers with their round bellies

and all the little babies.  Years later I would go to college to become a nurse.

My journey with patient care began.

I have worked in HIV/AIDS care, in the Newborn Nursery, in Neonatal ICU, on Labor and Delivery, and have practiced as Breastfeeding Consultant. Seeing my passion for mothers and babies I was encouraged by my husband to go to Nurse Midwifery School.

I am a 1999 graduate from the first class of Nurse Midwifery students from Shenandoah University and began Midwifery work in December of that year.

For 25 years I have served the Winchester Community as a CNM in a variety of offices- always looking for the right fit for my clients and for my own life with my own family. I have delivered babies at Winchester Medical Center for 20+ years- delivering over 3000 babies. I have cared for Low-risk and High-risk pregnancies, and have provided Gynecology care across the lifespan to so many wonderful women of this little community.

I learned so much about women and their babies over these precious years from other midwives, doctors, and nurses. But most of all,  I learned from actively listening to women.

At this stage of my life, I am bringing together all of my experiences to create what I know can change how women receive care across their lifespan. Having a baby out of the hospital is not for everyone, but truly allows the intimacy with expecting mothers that I always strived for.  Midwifery based care I know makes a difference to women in so many ways when the true art of Midwifery is practiced.

I deeply enjoy prenatal care and birth and watching a mother embracing her baby for the first time!

Additionally, personalized gynecology care across the lifespan and being there for women for years and years is an honor and privilege.  These are precious moments.

In my personal time, I am a wife (to my husband Khanh), a mother to three grown children (Khristopher, Katie Ann, and Kaleb), a Mimi to eight grandchildren- and counting, and a daughter to two amazingly supportive parents. I enjoy baking, singing, hiking & biking with my husband, traveling (especially to Vietnam), spending beautiful and simple moments with my family,  and being actively involved in my faith community at Bethel Lutheran Church!

Sandra Williams, Certified Nurse Midwife

I was born and raised in Ghana, but I now live in Winchester, Virginia.

My dream of becoming a midwife began in London where I lived 18 years ago.  My mother had given birth to my youngest sister with the care of a midwife. My mother talked about how wonderful, patient and caring the midwife was .  My mother's story to me was so touching that I became interested in the Midwifery profession.

I earned my Associate's degree in Nursing from Wytheville Community College and my Bachelor's degree in Nursing from King University. My nursing experiences include working with adults in the hospital setting, mothers and their babies in the hospital setting, labor and delivery, and home care.  I worked with some amazing and powerful faculty and mentors at Shenandoah University earning my Master's in Nursing -specializing in Midwifery.  I began work in Nurse Midwifery in 2016.

As a Nurse Midwife I have worked with women in all settings- home,

birth center, and hospital.  But it is the out of hospital setting that suits me best as a Nurse Midwife.  My ambition as a Midwife is to empower and support all women to birth naturally and peacefully.  Each mother's desires become my desires.  I am passionate about providing evidence based care and promoting the Midwife Model of Care in all I do as a Midwife.

It gives me great honor to have the opportunity to be part of the birthing experiences of the women of the Winchester community.  I look at my career as a God given mission to serve mothers and their babies with kindness and compassion.   All mothers deserve a Midwife!

In my free time I enjoy special moments with my family, having an active worship presence with my faith community at Cornerstone Church, and living a life of gratitude and grace.
